The Marshallese Education Day Committe and Marshall Islands Consulate - Honolulu are sponsoring a school supply drive ending on September 13, 2013.

"Your Move"

The "Your Move" initiative is a youth project that looks to collect positive contents "by Micronesians and for Micronesians".

Excerpt:

"We will be collecting and documenting POSITIVE content by Micronesians  and for Micronesians. Not dense articles, not pieces on difficulties and  challenges, but music, art, food, recipes, movies, sports, fashion,  fishing, travel, photos, dance, businesses, etc. that features,  includes, or is about Micronesia."

Examples:

1. Recordings from sporting events (pictures, videos etc.).

2. Recordings of community events (church gatherings, birthday parties etc.).

3. Recipes & photos of favorite foods.

4. Artworks (music, dance, artpieces etc.).

5. Micronesian business owners (Good opportunity to advertise your business).

Students Across Micronesia Awarded Habele K12 Scholarships

Students working at Yap Catholic High School. YCHS is one of eight schools across Yap, Chuuk and Pohnpei where Habele supports students through it's tuition scholarship program.

US-based charity Habele has announced issuance of its annual tuition K12  scholarships to students across the Federated States of Micronesia  (FSM) this week. The scholarships are awarded to low-income and  high-performing students to attend the K-12 school of their family’s  choosing.

Massive Sailing Canoe Takes Shape on Lamotrek

Adzes are used to slowly remove wood forming the hull

Men on the remote Pacific Atoll of Lamotrek are hard at work, carving  and shaping a massive sailing canoe. In addition to preserving their  native traditions, they may be carving their way into the record books  as they work under a tarp by the open-air mens' house on the beach.

Voyaging canoes in the Caroline Islands (modern day "Micronesia") are  made from hollowed-out tree trunks for the keel. Planks are then fitted  and tied in with rope made from coconut fibers to complete the sides.  These graceful crafts appear symmetrical. Orpha Hapdei is a seventh grade student at Saint Mary's School in  Colonia. Her family is from the Atoll of Ulithi, a remote outer island  of Yap, Micronesia.

Storied Canoe Returns Home to Micronesia 70 Years Later

James  Hapdei holds a model canoe in Yap, Micronesia. The model was a gift  from his father to Francis Wilson, Chief Pharmacist’s Mate, who helped  treat a Yaws epidemic during World War Two
(Colonia, Yap) A two-foot long model canoe has returned to Yap,  Micronesia, where it will be restored and preserved by a local group of  carvers. Included in the group is the son of the man who first made the  model for a special US Sailor seven decades ago.

UH Manoa: 150% Resident Rate for Pacific Islanders.

For decades, Pacific Island students who enrolled in the University of Hawaii (UH) qualified for resident tuition so long as they met certain criteria. On June 15, 2006, the UH policies changed. Pacific Island students continued to be exempted from non-resident tuition; however, the policy was revised to include an increase in tuition rate. Dengue Strain Found in FSM

A strain of Dengue fever, absent from parts of the Pacific for decades has been found in the FSM.

Dengue: An acute infectious, eruptive, febrile disease caused by four  antigenically related but distinct serotypes of the DENGUE VIRUS. It is  transmitted by the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, especially A.  aegypti. Classical dengue (dengue fever) is self-limiting and  characterized by fever, myalgia, headache, and rash. DENGUE HEMORRHAGIC  FEVER is a more virulent form of dengue virus infection and a separate  clinical entity. (From Dorland, 28th ed)

As defined above, dengue is usually spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes. The finding coincides with FSM's rainy season, as well as the holiday season, when many locals travel to and from the islands. This makes the possibility of a spread, likely.

Appeal Korab/McManaman: January 20, 2012- Notice of Oral Arguement

" Friends, Advocates, Community Members:

As you know, the State of Hawai`i is appealing the Preliminary Injunction in Korab v. Koller that restored State Quest health benefits for Micronesians.  Today we received the Notice of Oral Argument for the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals for the Korab case. 

On January 20, 2012 oral arguments will be held in the case at the courthouse in San Francisco. During oral arguments the litigators and attorneys from each side will have 15 minutes to state their case before the panel of judges. At this time, we do not yet know the  judges who will decide the case. After oral arguments, we do not know how long it may take to get a decision from the 9th Circuit. 

We ask that all of you please forward this on to your relevant community leaders and allies. If you have questions or would like to talk to us about the case, please don't hesitate to call or email. 

We will send out more detailed information when it becomes available, but wanted to get the word out in the community today."
