2011 Pacific Games

The 2011 Pacific Games is underway. The event formally started in August 27, and will continue until September 10. 22 countries from the Pacific will be participating in this event. Including Micronesian countries listed to participate: the FSM, Guam, CNMI, Nauru, Palau, Kiribati, and the Marshall Islands.

The host country, New Caledonia, is a heavy favorite to take in most of the medals. They tallied the most medals in the previous Games, taking in nearly 100 medals more than their closest competitor in the previous Pacific Games.

1. Nauru leads the Micronesian nations with 4 gold medals, 13 overall, thanks to their solid boxing and weightlifting teams.

2. FSM joins the Medal Tally, thanks to London Olympics hopeful, Manuel Minginfel and his 3 gold medals in weightlifting.

3. Kiribati also takes one gold and one bronze in weightlifing, totaling 3 medals overall.

4.  Guam is still searching for its first gold after picking up 5 medals in  bodybuilding, swimming and athletics. Their basketball team has a  chance at the gold after beating defending champions Fiji, 57-51.

5. Palau is still searching for a gold, after collecting 3 medals in weightlifting. They are still in pool play in the Beach Volleyball event, and are in the semi-finals of the baseball match.

6. RMIcame close in athletics, they fell short in the women's 800m finals to a dominant Papua New Guinea team that swept the event.

7. CNMI is still without a medal but are doing well in Beach Volleyball, athletics, and is in the final four of the Baseball tournament with fellow Micronesians, Palau.

8. And, as expected, host country New Caledonia leads the event with a whopping 77 gold medals, 168 medals in total.
